How to perform Wudu

A step by step guide on how to perform Wudu.

Wudu (ablution) is the the purification of the body before Salah. Without it, your Salah wont be accepted.

Step 1

Intention

Make the intention that you will be performing Wudu and say ‘Bismillah’.

Step 2

Hands

a. Starting with the right hand, wash from the finger tips to the wrist. Do this three times.

b. Perform the same with your left hand. Do this three times.

Step 3

Mouth

Take some water into your right hand and rinse your mouth three times.

Step 4

Nose

Take some water into your right hand and sniff/snort the water into your nose and blow it out. Do this three times.

Careful not to take in too much water in order to avoid hurting yourself.

Step 5

Face

Wash your face three times.

You will need to wash the whole face from ear to ear and forehead to chin.

If you have a a beard then run your wet hands through it.

Step 6

Arms

a. Starting from the right hand, wash from your fingertips to your elbow. Do this three times.

b. Then do the same with your left arm, three times.

Step 7

Head

Wipe your head from your forehead to the back of the head, once.

Step 8

Ears

Use your index finger to clean the inside of the ears and thumb to clean the area behind the ears. Do this once.

Step 9

Feet

a. Wash your right foot, from the top of your toes to the ankle. Ensure the bottom and top of the foot is washed. Do this three times.

b. Do the same with your left foot, three times.

You have now completed your Wudu.

What Nullifies Wudu?

  • Anything that is a natural discharge. This refers to urine, stool, or passing gas
  • Falling asleep
  • Becoming unconscious
  • Ejaculation

If any of the above take place then you will need to perform wudu again.
